Register Of Directors’ Residential Addresses (internal use only)
Under the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023 (ECCTA), the requirement for companies to maintain statutory registers (other than the register of members) is abolished with effect from 18 November 2025. This includes the register of directors’ residential addresses.
What changes from 18 November 2025
The register at Companies House will become the sole, verified source of this information.
The ECCTA also creates stringent requirements for keeping Companies House updated on changes. Relevant changes must be notified to Companies House within 14 days of the change occurring.
Service address and usual residential address
On appointment, a director must provide Companies House with two addresses:
- a service address; and
- their usual residential address.
A service address is a correspondence address for the public register and can be the company’s registered office address or a different address. A director’s usual residential address is their home address and is not available on the public register. It is held on a private register and is only released to specified credit reference agencies and public authorities.
Where a director does not want their home address to be publicly available, they should choose a different address as their service address or the company’s registered office address.
Why keep an internal register of directors’ residential addresses?
Although companies may dispense with the statutory register of directors’ residential addresses, many may still choose to maintain an internal record for governance and practical reasons, at least for the time being.
An internal register may be helpful:
- as good housekeeping and governance, to keep an organised internal record of information previously kept in statutory registers;
- for due diligence when engaging with third parties (particularly investors and entities from abroad);
- when seeking a loan; and
- where the company is the target in an acquisition, including presenting historic and current information in a clear and orderly manner.
What this template is for
This template can be used by companies that wish to continue maintaining an internal register of directors’ residential addresses. It has been updated to reflect that it is now purely an internal record.
