Guidance Note: Changes to Statutory Registers

CO.REG.32

The Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023 (ECCTA) introduces significant changes to company transparency and the way certain statutory information is recorded.

Statutory registers abolished from 18 November 2025

From 18 November 2025, the following statutory registers are abolished:

  • register of directors;
  • register of directors’ usual residential addresses;
  • register of secretaries; and
  • register of Persons with Significant Control.

Companies House becomes the central record for abolished registers

Rather than maintaining these registers themselves, from 18 November 2025 companies must submit the relevant information to Companies House, where it will be filed and held on the central register.

The register of members remains and must be kept locally

Companies are still required to maintain a register of members under the Companies Act 2006. From 18 November 2025 it must be maintained as an internal local register at the company’s registered office address or a SAIL.

What this guidance note covers

This guidance note provides an overview and considers:

  • what has changed;
  • why the registers are being removed;
  • what information must be recorded going forward;
  • a worked example (register of directors);
  • the register of members; and
  • continuing to maintain internal company registers of information after 18 November 2025.
