Health and Safety Induction Checklist – Work Experience
For health and safety law purposes, work experience students or interns are treated as a Company’s employees and should be treated no differently from other young people the Company may employ.
Many young people undertaking work experience will be new to the workplace and may be exposed to unfamiliar risks arising from the work they are doing and/or their surroundings. This Health and Safety Induction Checklist helps employers deliver a structured induction and raise awareness of potential health and safety risks in the workplace.
Insurance and further guidance
Existing employers’ liability insurance policies will cover work experience placements provided the insurer is a member of the Association of British Insurers or Lloyds.
Further practical guidance on the health and safety aspects of taking on a work experience student is available on the Health and Safety Executive’s website.
