Letter Offering Work Experience Placement or Internship
This Offer Letter confirms the offer of a work experience placement (or internship) and the duration of this placement.
The letter offers alternative paragraphs depending on whether or not the work experience placement/internship is paid. The employer does not have to pay the minimum wage if the work experience only involves shadowing an employee, i.e. no work is carried out by the individual doing work experience/intern and they are only observing. Similarly, work experience students of compulsory school age (under 16) are not entitled to the national minimum wage. However, if the intern or work experience student could be considered to be a ‘worker’, then the National Minimum Wage (NMW) should be paid.
There is an optional clause referring the intern to his/her employment contract. The Simply-Docs Fixed Term Employment Contract should be used in circumstances when the intern/work experience student is being paid at least the NMW, is carrying out specific tasks and he or she should be considered to be an employee.
The Offer Letter explains the Company’s dress code, the importance of confidentiality and the arrangements for the first day of the work experience placement. The Offer Letter also refers to the health and safety induction. Please see the separate Health and Safety Induction Checklist for details of what this should cover.
