Letter Offering Work Experience Placement or Internship
This Offer Letter confirms the offer of a work experience placement (or internship) and the duration of the placement.
Paid and unpaid placements
The letter includes alternative wording depending on whether the placement is paid. The employer does not have to pay the minimum wage where the placement involves shadowing only (i.e. the individual observes an employee and does not carry out work). Work experience students of compulsory school age (under 16) are also not entitled to the national minimum wage.
However, if the intern or work experience student could be considered a “worker”, the National Minimum Wage (NMW) should be paid.
Optional link to an employment contract
The letter includes an optional clause referring the intern to an employment contract. The Simply-Docs Fixed Term Employment Contract should be used where the intern/work experience student is paid at least the NMW, carries out specific tasks and should be considered an employee.
What the letter covers
- The Company’s dress code
- Confidentiality expectations
- First-day arrangements for the placement
- A reference to the health and safety induction (see the separate Health and Safety Induction Checklist)
