Flexible Working Request Letter
This Flexible Working Request Letter is for employees making a statutory request for flexible working.
Employees have the right to request flexible working from day one of employment, and employers must deal with requests within a two-month time limit and in a reasonable manner.
What a statutory flexible working request must include
The right to request flexible working is a statutory right. A dated written application must:
- state that it is being made under the statutory right to request flexible working;
- specify the flexible working pattern requested;
- specify the date on which the new working pattern should start; and
- state whether any previous application has been made and, if so, when.
Applications in a 12-month period
Employees can make two applications for flexible working in a 12-month period.
Why this letter is useful
This letter is drafted to meet the statutory requirements for a flexible working request and helps employees set out the key information clearly. It can be used alongside the Flexible Working Policy, with the Flexible Working Request Acknowledgement Letter and Flexible Working Decision Letter supporting the employer’s next steps.
