Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme (Furlough Leave)

The Chancellor announced a range of support measures for employers affected by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, including grants available under the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme.

The scheme is intended to support employers to continue paying employees who would otherwise be made redundant or put on an unpaid period of lay-off during this crisis. The Guidance Notes on the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme and Furlough Leave provide valuable information on what is required to qualify for the Scheme, how to furlough staff and how furlough and redundancy relate.

Part of the qualification process will require the employer to designate affected employees as ‘furloughed workers’, and to notify employees of this change. A Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme Furlough Leave Letter can be used to explain an employer’s plan to furlough staff. The Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme Furlough Leave Agreement can then be used to seek employees’ agreement to the Company placing them on Furlough Leave.

At the end of each furlough period the employer should review the furlough arrangements and there are additional template letters to cover an employee returning to work or an extension to the furlough period.
