These Shared Parental Leave Guidance Notes provide a useful summary of the main points of the new system of Shared Parental Leave, which has been introduced in respect of children due on or after 5 April 2015 or due to be adopted on or after 5 April 2015. See also the Shared Parental Leave Policy.
Shared parental leave (SPL) replaces additional statutory paternity leave and enables a mother to choose to return to work quickly and hand over her unused allowance to the other parent, provided that they are also eligible for SPL. Qualifying parents can share up to 50 weeks’ leave from the birth of the child until their first birthday.
