Guidance Notes: Probationary Period

Probationary Period Guidance Notes

EMP.PP.01

The Probationary Period Guidance Notes refer to the clause relating to the Probationary Period in the Employee’s Contract of Employment.

The Guidance Notes explain how the probationary period can be used better to manage the employee’s first few months with the company. A probationary period is, essentially, a trial period for the employee and enables both sides to assess how well suited the new recruit is to the role.

At the end of the probationary period, the employer can:
1. confirm the employee in post;
2. extend the probationary period; or
3. dismiss the employee. It is also possible to dismiss the employee during the probationary period.

The Guidance Notes explain all of these alternatives. Letters which relate to all of these options can be found elsewhere in this sub-folder.
