Probationary Period Guidance Notes
The Probationary Period Guidance Notes refer to the clause relating to the probationary period in the employee’s Contract of Employment.
The Guidance Notes advise employers as to how the probationary period can be used better to manage the employee’s first few months with the company. A probationary period generally lasts between three and six months and is, essentially, a trial period for the employee that enables both sides to assess how well suited the new recruit is to the role. Probationary periods can also be used when an existing employee moves into a new, completely different role within the same organisation.
During the probationary period, the employer should meet the new employee regularly to give feedback and review progress. At the end of the probationary period, the employer can:
1. confirm the employee in post;
2. extend the probationary period; or
3. dismiss the employee. It is also possible to dismiss the employee during the probationary period.
The Guidance Notes explain all of these alternatives. Letters relating to all of these options are also available.
