This template Internal Financial Controls Policy for a Small (Unincorporated) Charity will assist a small charity (i.e. an unincorporated charity with up to £10,000 annual income) to create its own financial controls policy document.
It is not a legal or regulatory requirement for a charity to have such a policy, but it is good practice to have one, and in any event the Charity Commission considers that all charities need financial controls regardless of size.
A formal policy document setting out such financial controls:
- makes clear for all existing and new trustees of a charity and others what those controls are.
- can be used as a checklist to monitor whether the charity is actually fully implementing those controls.
- is a useful tool to help ensure that your charity and its trustees act and operate in accordance with the relevant Charity Commission guidance documents (the Internal Financial Controls for Charities CC8 and The Essential Trustee: What You Need To Know, What You Need To Do CC3)
This template should be amended and adapted to suit your charity. Additional provisions can be inserted to cater for your charity’s particular circumstances and activities.
