Supplier Allergen Checklist
This Supplier Allergen Checklist can be used by food business operators to keep an accurate record of the presence of any notifiable allergens in the products that their suppliers deliver to them. For the food business operator to ensure that they are correctly notifying their consumers about the allergen content of their food and drinks, they need to know the details of any allergens listed in the relevant Regulations that are present in the products that are delivered to them by their suppliers.
The relevant Regulations are the EU Food Information for Consumers Regulation (No. 1169/2011) (FIC) and Food Information Regulations 2014 (SI 2014/1855) (FIR). They require food businesses to provide clear and accurate information on the allergens present in the food they have produced so that allergic individuals can avoid consuming food that may cause them to have an allergic reaction. The food business’s obligations under the Regulations apply to all prepacked food, non-prepacked food and food prepacked for direct sale provided by the food business.
The Supplier Allergen Checklist should be provided to the supplier when the food business makes an order. The intention is that the supplier will then fill in the product and allergen details on the form, with a separate sheet being used for each product. Each sheet contains a list of the 14 notifiable allergen groups with examples of allergens that fall within each group. Any allergens present in the product could be highlighted, circled or all allergens that are not in the product could be deleted from the page. The key is to clearly show which allergens are present in the product. The form details the majority of different allergen types in each allergen group, however other types of the allergens can be put on the form in the boxes marked “other”. The supplier should sign the form to confirm the allergen information and the form should be provided with the delivered product. Until notification of the presence, or not, of the listed allergens has been received from the supplier the delivered products should not be used by the food business.
