Quotation and Extract Licence (Author's Version)
This Quotation and Extract Licence is designed for use where a writer wants to include quotations or extracts from another copyright work in their own work.
If the quoted or extracted work remains in copyright, consent will generally be required. This licence records that consent in a written agreement.
Licensing quotations and extracts from an author-owned work
This version is for use where the author of the original work retains full ownership of the work and the copyright in it. The agreement is therefore between the author and the licensee.
Where the relevant rights have been assigned or licensed to a publisher, the alternative publisher-to-licensee version should be used instead.
What the quotation and extract licence covers
The agreement identifies the quotations or extracts to be used and sets out key terms including:
- ownership of copyright in the source work;
- how the licensee may use the quotation or extract;
- the original author’s right to a credit or acknowledgement; and
- the fee payable for using the quotation or extract.
