Guidance Notes: Driving at Work – Transport Fleet Manager

HS.SD.05

This Driving at Work – Transport Fleet Manager Guidance Note is designed to assist Transport Managers in ensuring that their employees are protected when they make use of a vehicle whilst in the course of work.

It is a fact that many hundreds of people are killed or injured every year while carrying out driving duties at work. When we think of people who drive for work we normally think of taxis or buses or lorry drivers.

But those who drive at work will also include anyone in your company who drives to a meeting, or the person who uses their own car to collect or deliver an urgent order.

Whether these people use their own car or one is supplied by the company, the same requirements apply. They must be qualified to drive the class of vehicle, be properly insured and the vehicle itself must be roadworthy.

These guidance notes are intended to be a memory jogger, to simply remind the person in charge of the company vehicles of what he/she needs to look for.

This template also refers to the potential risks of not carrying out proper risk assessments and exercising good health and safety practices, including associated fines and information on the Court's sentencing guidelines.
