Examples of Raffles

Description of Lawful Raffles

This Description of Lawful Raffles provides a non-exhaustive list of examples of various types of raffle which comply with the relevant law on lotteries (the Gambling Act 2005) as amended by the Legislative Reform (Exempt Lotteries) Order 2016 on 6 April 2016. The examples described in this note are intended to help you to plan any of the types of raffle which are commonly run to fundraise for the benefit of a charity or other good cause.

There are two lists of examples in the note, those types of raffle which:

• could be lawfully held before 6 April 2016; and

• can be held on or after that date in addition to those in the first list.

As you will see from the second list, the change in the law on 6 April 2016 has given greater scope for carrying out fundraising by means of raffles for the benefit of charities or other good causes. This means that from 6 April 2016, it is lawful to run all of the types of raffle described in both lists.

This document and the accompanying Checklist for Lawful Raffles supplement the Guidance Note in this subfolder to provide practical guidance for anyone considering organising a raffle for the benefit of a charity or other good cause.
