Grievance Procedures

EMP.DISC.03

This Grievance Procedure is designed to help employers deal with employee complaints, concerns, and workplace issues fairly, consistently, and without unnecessary delay.

It should be read alongside the Guidance Notes and is drafted to reflect the ACAS Code of Practice.

All employers should follow fair and reasonable procedures when handling grievances. The procedure used should also be proportionate to the size and resources of the business.

Even a very small employer should provide at least one stage of appeal, even if that appeal has to be heard by the same manager who conducted the original hearing.

What This Grievance Procedure Covers

The procedure includes the main stages employers usually need when managing grievance issues:

  • informal resolution;
  • the formal grievance process;
  • confidentiality; and
  • special cases.

When This Template Is Useful

This template is suitable for employers that need a clear internal procedure for handling employee grievances in a structured and consistent way.

It is particularly useful where a business wants a grievance procedure that aligns with accepted workplace practice and supports a fair approach to complaints handling.

Why a Grievance Procedure Matters

A clear grievance procedure helps employers respond properly when employees raise concerns. It also supports consistency in how issues are handled across the business.

Used with the related guidance, it helps employers manage grievance issues in a way that is organised, timely, and more likely to be seen as fair.
