Employers need to be aware of their duties when considering employing workers from overseas. Not only is it important to follow the correct procedures and checks to ensure that an immigrant is legally entitled to work in the UK, but businesses must also avoid discriminating against candidates on the basis of their origin. 

Nationals of countries in the European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland can live and work in the UK without any restrictions. But employers considering taking on a staff member from outside the EEA must adhere to a points-based system and obtain a sponsor licence.
