This general health and safety policy document package is written specifically for sole traders and partnership businesses and contains clauses tailored to the needs of SMEs. This Sole Trader/Partnership General Health and Safety Statement, Policies and Procedures Sub-folder contains documents that will help businesses to pursue excellence in the management of health and safety at work.

Every business with five or more employees (including any part-time staff) must have a Health and Safety Policy which states its commitment to looking after the health, safety and welfare of its employees and any others who may be affected by its work. These should be supported by further documents showing the procedures in place in order to implement the Policy.

All businesses (irrespective of number of employees) should start with a signed Sole Trader/Partnership General Health and Safety Statement (sometimes called a Statement of Intent) which must be displayed at the premises. If your business has 5 or more employees (including part-time staff) you must also have a Health and Safety Policy. This can be built on by showing how the different aspects of health and safety in the business are managed by using the Sole Trader/Partnership General Health and Safety Arrangements and Procedures document. Each document provides the space to explain in detail how health and safety is managed by the business, and who is responsible for the different aspects of health and safety.

Businesses must comply with the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974, which states:- “It shall be the duty of every employer to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the health, safety and welfare at work of all his employees”.
