Engaging Volunteers to Raise Funds

Engaging Volunteers to Raise Funds

Charities often organise and run fundraising events or activities themselves. They will manage and supervise the individual members of their staff and volunteers who are involved in running such events and activities. Those individuals act as part of the charity, and it is responsible for what they do.

However, there are many voluntary groups of individuals who get together in order to raise funds for a charity. Volunteer groups play an important part in fundraising and supporting charitable giving. They do not undertake any obligation to the charity to carry out any particular fundraising activity or event or indeed to raise any funds at all, but, if they choose to do so, they have to observe certain requirements. They have to act completely independently of the charity, “in aid of” and not either “on behalf of” or as part of the charity, to ensure that the charity is not responsible for them.

This is explained more fully in Volunteer Fundraising Groups and in Volunteer Fundraising Groups: Rules For Working With A Charity and Guidance Notes - Volunteer Charity Fundraising Groups
