Charity Grant Making Policy 
This Charity Grant Making Policy template can be used by charity trustees when writing a policy for their charity to regulate the giving of grants by their charity.
Not all charities make grants but, to meet best practice, those that do make grants should adopt a policy dealing with the key aspects of making grants.
The charity should make use of detailed forms of grant agreement. Those forms should comprehensively deal with all issues (but the grant making policy need not cover all of those issues). There are several accompanying template grant agreements available.
It is suggested that the process of applying for a grant be a two stage process.
The first stage will be the applicant's submission of an initial application or expression of interest in receiving a grant. This will probably contain insufficient information for it to be treated as a formal application for a grant. In response to that expression of interest/initial application, the charity can send a copy of its grant making policy to the applicants together with an initial draft grant agreement.
The second stage will be submission of the formal application with all necessary supporting information.
The charity's trustees can then consider what they need to add and change in the form of agreement before formally presenting an amended agreement to the applicant for signature.
This template is in open format. The requisite details should be inserted into the highlighted fields or the wording can be adjusted to suit your purposes. Wording in square brackets is optional. If it is required, then the brackets should be deleted and the wording within them retained. If the wording is not required, then it can be deleted.
