Frequently Asked Questions

Local supporters want to set up a group to fundraise for our charity. Should we encourage it? +
Yes, with structure. Volunteer fundraising groups, friends-of groups and local committees are among the most effective grassroots fundraising there is, but they act in your charity's name, handle money meant for it and can bind its reputation. Encourage the energy and formalise the relationship on day one with written rules covering authority, money handling and use of your name. The rules template and guidance notes in this sub-folder exist for precisely this moment.
What should the written rules between our charity and a volunteer group cover? +
Five essentials: what the group may and may not do in the charity's name, including any limits on regulated activities like raffles or street collections, how money is collected, recorded and paid over, use of the charity's name and logo, who the group's contact and treasurer are, and how the arrangement ends. The point is not bureaucracy, it is that both sides know the boundaries before a problem tests them. The Rules For Working With A Charity template covers all five.
Who legally owns the money a volunteer group raises in our name? +
Your charity, from the moment it is raised: funds solicited for a charity are held for that charity and the group must pass them over, promptly and without deductions the rules do not allow. The group cannot redirect money to another cause, however worthy, because donors gave on the strength of your charity's name. Make the pay-over obligation, timescale and record-keeping explicit in the written rules, and reconcile what arrives against what events should have produced.
