Informal Discussion Letter

EMP.GRIEV.07

This Informal Discussion Letter should be used by employers after they have discussed the employee’s grievance informally. It should confirm in writing to the employee what has been discussed during the informal talk and any action that it was decided should be taken.

Employers should follow the new ACAS Code of Practice in relation to grievance procedures. According to the Code of Practice, where possible, grievances should be dealt with informally. However, where the grievance is serious or an employee has attempted to raise a problem informally without success they can proceed toraising a formal grievance.

This Informal Discussion Letter should be used in conjunction with the Guidance Notes: Grievance Procedures and the Grievance Policy and Procedure documents.

It should be noted that the new ACAS Code of Practice is not compulsory, however, Employment Tribunals have the power to adjust awards by up to 25% if employers or employees have failed unreasonably to comply with the ACAS Code of Practice.
