Food and Hygiene Policy

This Food and Hygiene Policy is an important part of the process of maintaining high standards of food hygiene and obeying food hygiene law. It is relevant if you own a restaurant, cafe, sandwich shop, food preparation business or any other business that prepares stores or handles food.

Food handling businesses need to be compliant with the Food Standards Agency recommendations, the Food Hygiene Regulations 2013 and EC Regulations on the hygiene of foodstuffs and our Food and Hygiene Policy is a very useful tool in this process. Such food related businesses have a legal requirement to have food safety management procedures in place which demonstrate what the business does to make or sell food that is safe to eat. These food safety management procedures must be written down, kept up to date with any changes in the business and regularly reviewed. The business has a legal requirement to identify potential food safety hazards relevant to the business and then to have put procedures in place to manage these potential hazards.

Day to day monitoring and enforcement of food hygiene law is carried out by your Local Authority's food law enforcement officers. Businesses should be aware that such officers can visit your premises randomly as well as in reaction to a complaint. The officers can take enforcement action to protect the public and can recommend a prosecution in serious cases.
