Letter to an Employee who has Requested Time Off to Attend an Adoption Appointment

EMP.ADO.21

This Letter to an Employee who has Requested Time Off to Attend an Adoption Appointment should be used to respond to an employee who asks for time off to attend an adoption appointment to enable them to have contact with the child (e.g. to bond with the child before the placement) and for any other purpose connected with the adoption (e.g. to meet with the professionals involved in the care of the child).

The right to time off to attend an adoption appointment is capped at six-and-a-half hours on each occasion, although individuals should take only the time that they need to attend the adoption appointment. The appointment must have been arranged by or at the request of the adoption agency. The time off must be taken before the date of the child's placement for adoption with the individual.

In this letter there are optional clauses which should be used for joint adopters on the first occasion he or she requests time off and for sole or joint adopters if he or she has already signed a declaration.

Employers should be aware that they cannot ask or expect the individual to make up for lost time by working additional hours at another time.
